The XieYi technique, also called "Free Style", is painted fresh from the hand and the design of the image is subject to few restrictions.
In the style of calligraphy, the image should not be painted, but written.

The ShuiMo technique, also called water-ink technique, is a subspecies of the Xieyi technique. Here however, only water and ink are used. The gray effects are created by the intensity of the ink.
